Le Petit Italien

I was looking for a restaurant to try with my roommate this evening and I wanted it to be in Outremont because I don’t go in the gorgeous neighborhood often enough! My friend proposed that I try Le Petit Italien on Bernard.
I love Italian food but the quality of it seems to be pretty bad around town. After visiting the (nice) website, I thought I’d give it a try anyway.

I went pretty early, just a little before 6pm so we didn’t need to reserve a table but it got packed pretty fast. It’s always good to make a call before heading there! The restaurant looks very nice and more expensive than the prices they actually charge. The only thing that I found expensive was the wine list. Glasses are mostly around 10$ for Italian wines I never heard of but I did enjoy my glass of Merlot.

For the appetizer, I ordered the organic salmon tartare mixed with grilled capers and ginger. It was very tasty and fresh. The tartare and two crakers that came with it were covered by a thin layer of olive oil. The portion was perfect too!

To my joy, I got to eat a risotto as an entrée. Risottos can be so amazing when well made! I ordered the appetizer size which made it a decent plate following the previous dish. I think every Italian restaurant should offer half-dishes when it comes to pasta and rice as it can be too filling. Cuccina on St-Laurent does that too and the portions are still generous!

Three types of risottos were offered and I decided to go with the risotto primavera made up of zucchini, carrots, spinach and prosciutto. The dish was so earthy with every flavor well balanced but I didn’t care much about the prosciutto. I’d rather replace it with chorizo if I was given the choice or no meat at all!

The dessert list seemed nice and I would have loved to try their tiramisu – it must be a real one after all. Their crème brulée sounded intriguing too but as you’ll get used to, I rarely can make it to dessert after a nice two plate course.

Conclusion: It might just be my new favorite Italian restaurant in town. Perfect portions and great presentation!

  1. Love Petit Italien! I went there for a friend’s birthday and everyone loved it- food is delicious, wine list is thumbs up, nice atmosphere, good service. good article!

    J’avais déjà essayé le risotto aussi et j’avais beaucoup aimé. Les pâtes aussi sont bonnes. Et là, j’ai le goût d’y aller maintenant … le pire c’est que je pourrais parce que c’est ouvert tard mais je dois résister à la tentation!! 😉
