Coco Loco invited me a few weeks ago to visit their new Griffintown location and sample the brunch menu. Located right next to the Alt Hotel on Peel, it’s just a few minutes away from the Lachine canal.
The name might sound familiar if you’ve been through Laval on your way to the spa as their first location is in Ste-Rose.
What you might not know if that Coco Loco is a family owned restaurant “chain” that is obsessed with breakfast and they would have it at any time of the day.
Coco Loco - Smoothies
My friend and I got started on some specialty smoothies while we reviewed the menu. I tried the Mango Tango and Hawaiian Sunset, both delicious and very cool. All the smoothies are made with yogourt so I’m not sure what it is replaced with if you can’t do dairy.
Coco Loco - Benedictine
I chose the Alps Benedict plate which consisted of asparagus, ham and Swiss cheese. The eggs were perfect and the hollandaise sauce couldn’t have tasted more fresh. It’s also great to know that your Benedict can come with moist gluten free bread! The potatoes would have been great with spices or onions for an extra kick.
Coco Loco - Waffles
My friend had the Coco Loco Special waffle plate. It came with 1 huge waffle in 4 portions that could easily be shared amongst a family or friends. The fruit portion was incredibly generous to the point that we couldn’t finish what was on the plate. But what made this dish amazing was the coconut syrup dipping sauce.
I apparently missed out on this sauce that is being served regularly in Hawaii breakfast joints. The Coco Loco family fell in love with it on a trip and has been serving it on their menu ever since.
Coco Loco - Quiet location
Our first experience at Coco Loco was lovely. The restaurant was quiet, spacious (which is a plus for families) and full of light. The service was quick and basic things like drip coffee were not good but great!
Having had many bad brunch experiences in Griffintown while I lived there, Coco Loco is a great addition to the neighbourhood. It might not be located on a main street like Notre-Dame but the walk down on Peel will encourage you to go for a stroll by the water after a good brunch!
