I decided to try Taza Flores tonight after a friend of mine told me it should stay a secret in the Mile-End. I’m sorry but after my experience, I can’t help but share this hidden gem.

Taza Flores is a small but cozy tapas bar on Parc. The staff is friendly and will make sure that you do not miss anything during your meal. I also really liked the way tables were placed, making sure you never feel like you’re in the way.

The tapas menu is quite exciting and not expensive at all considering that all the taxes are included, also for the alcohol. We decided to go with four tapas for two and see if it would make us satisfied.

The first dish was sweet herring accompanied by slices of potatoes and red onions rings. It’s the first time I’ve had this type of fish served sweet according to a Swedish tradition instead of being very salty but I really liked it. The sweetnest made the overall fish flavor fade out to really get an idea of the real taste the herring has.

Our second plate was a spanish tortilla, which is basically a pie of potatoes and eggs, with chorizo. Nothing to do with the mexican tortilla. The flavors were great and the tortilla wasn’t heavy at all which is something that seems to happen often when I order it. It felt like I was in Barcelona again!

Third dish, to my friend’s excitement, consisted of a date stuffed with chorizo and nuts and then rolled in a bacon slice. I wouldn’t have ordered this if it would have been my choice but to my surprise, it was quite amazing. All the flavours faded perfectly together and the nuts were exactly what you were craving for at the end of the bite. Go bacon dates!

Finally, we went with the tilapia ceviche in coconut milk. The ceviche was wonderful! The sauce was a mix of coconut milk, hot spices and parsley with cubes of red peppers for an extra crunch. I found myself eating almost the whole thing alone. Coconut milk and raw fish should be matched together more often. That’s a total win for Taza Flores.

As for drinks, since it was a special, we decided to try the home wine which is nothing like what you get in most restaurants. It was actually better than some bottles I unfortunately bought at SAQ. The drink list is short but well thought out too and to a lot of Bretons’ happiness, they do make Ti Ponche with Rhum Agricole!

Conclusion: The tapas spot to go to in Mile-End for a good price, a great service and lovely tapas. They offer 4 to 8 drink specials and also 3 tapas for $20 after 10pm, but make sure to reserve a table before going because it is small. The only downside is the music. They should invest in a few cds of Café Mélies to get the perfect vibe.
